New AI-driven report reveals why Lithium-Ion is winning and what Europe must do next

As the debate over the future of electric vehicles rages on, a new report from GetFocus—an AI-powered technology forecasting firm—sheds light on the disruptive trends shaping the automotive landscape. Using advanced analysis of patent filings and IP landscape, the report reveals that while lithium-ion battery technology is advancing at a staggering Technology Improvement Rate (TIR) of 73.5%, hydrogen fuel cells are lagging at just 26.5%. These figures indicate that technologies based on lithium-ion, particularly those incorporating innovations such as LFP cathodes and silicon-based  anodes, are poised to dominate the market.

A wake-up call for the global EV race

Historically, early adopters like BYD, SAIC, Geely, and developers, especially CATL, bet on lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries well before European automakers took notice. Tesla, after investing heavily in NMC from 2008 to 2015, shifted their R&D focus gradually from 2016, leading to a high-profile shift to LFP in 2021. In contrast, while European automakers began EV R&D as early as 2010, giants such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have only hinted at their intention to launch LFP-based EVs commercially in 2025. This not only represents an initial 5-year lag but also highlights a nearly decade-long delay in embracing advanced battery solutions.

“If European automakers had access to the kind of forecasting we provide, they wouldn’t have hedged their bets on multiple technologies,” says Jard van Ingen, CEO of GetFocus. “Our data shows that while NMC once outperformed LFP in cold weather, LFP now delivers comparable performance across an even wider temperature range. More importantly, the challenge of energy density is the next problem to solve, and silicon-based anodes are set to be the game changer for LFP batteries in this regard, triggering the next wave of battery innovation.”

What this means for Europe—and the world

The report underscores a critical insight: the global race in EV technology is not merely about choosing between BEV and FCEV; it’s about learning from past missteps and acting decisively. While hydrogen and synthetic fuels may retain niche roles for heavy-duty or off-grid applications, the future for passenger cars clearly belongs to lithium-ion-based systems that continue to evolve rapidly.

European automakers now face a pivotal choice:

☑️ Invest decisively in LFP + Silicon-based Anode technologies to overcome energy density challenges.

☑️ Consolidate R&D efforts around proven lithium-ion advancements to avoid further delays in competitive innovation.

☑️ Leverage AI technology forecasting to spot emerging trends early and stay ahead of the curve.
